One of the practical questions that lands in my inbox from foreign visitors is how the rental deposit is actually paid. People are nervous about it, and fairly so; you have just arrived in a country where the payment system looks unfamiliar, and somebody is asking you for several thousand yuan before you get the keys. Let me walk you through exactly how it works, what a credit card hold really means, and the other ways you can pay, so there are no surprises at the pickup desk.
What the deposit is for
First, it helps to understand why we take it. The car is ours and you are driving it for days or weeks, often far from the pickup office. The deposit covers two things: any unpaid traffic fines picked up during the rental, and the driver's share of damage if the car comes back worse than it left. It is not a fee we keep; provided the car is returned in order and there are no outstanding fines, the money comes back to you. The amounts on our fleet are fixed: 3,000 RMB for the Volkswagen Lavida or Jetta saloon, and 5,000 RMB for the Tank 300 SUV.
Credit card hold (pre-authorisation) explained
The method most foreign guests prefer is a credit card hold, sometimes called a pre-authorisation. Here is the important bit: we do not actually take the money from your account. The bank reserves, or freezes, the deposit amount against your card's available balance, so you cannot spend that slice of your credit limit while the rental is live, but no funds leave your account and no purchase is completed. When the car is returned and matters are settled, the hold is released and your available credit bounces back.
This is different from a normal card payment in a way worth understanding. A payment moves money there and then; a hold merely ring-fences it. On your banking app you may see the amount listed as pending or reserved rather than debited, and it will not appear on your statement as a purchase unless we genuinely need to make a claim, in which case only the agreed amount is captured rather than the whole hold.
Do foreign cards work?
Yes, international Visa and Mastercard credit cards can be used for the hold, and this is the common route for British, European and American guests. Since 2024, foreign cards have also been able to link into WeChat Pay and Alipay, which opens up everyday spending everywhere from restaurants to petrol stations. It is still sensible to bring a genuine credit card with headroom above the deposit, rather than relying solely on a debit card, because some debit cards do not support pre-authorisation holds smoothly and a hold can be declined at the till.
Tell your bank before you travel that you will be using the card in China, so the overseas activity does not trigger a fraud block at the wrong moment. And keep an eye on the exchange rate; a hold is converted when it is settled or released, though since no money moves on a clean rental, there is usually nothing to convert.
Other ways to pay
A card hold is not the only option. Guests who live in China or who have set up local payment can pay the deposit by bank card, WeChat Pay or Alipay, in which case the amount is genuinely transferred and later refunded by the same route. Cash is possible in some cases, though I would not recommend carrying several thousand yuan around when a card hold does the same job without the risk. If you are weighing the methods, the overview of rental costs and the Lijiang price comparison show how the deposit sits alongside the daily rate.
Deposit versus the booking payment
Do not confuse the vehicle deposit with the booking payment. To confirm a reservation we take a 600 RMB booking payment that holds the car for your dates; if you cancel for personal reasons that sum is not refunded, because we turned down other bookings while keeping it aside. The larger deposit is separate, refundable, and handled at pickup. The paperwork side is covered in the documents needed to hire a car, and for how damage claims interact with the deposit, see the insurance and deductible guide.
When and how it is released
Here is the one point guests sometimes misunderstand. Even after the car is back, traffic fines can take a little while to appear in the police system, so we wait around five to seven working days, check there are no outstanding violations, and then release a card hold or refund a transferred deposit by the original route. If there is a fine, it is settled from the deposit and the remainder comes back to you. This is why the money is not always back in your account the very same afternoon; it is a deliberate check rather than a delay for its own sake. The full timing is explained in the deposit refund timing guide.
My advice
Bring a credit card with enough spare limit for the 3,000 or 5,000 RMB hold, warn your bank about the trip, and treat the hold as a temporary reservation rather than a charge. It is the cleanest way to cover the deposit without moving large sums of cash. If you have any doubt about whether your particular card supports pre-authorisation, message me a photo of the card type before you fly and I will tell you if it will work, so everything is sorted before you land.
