Taiwanese Visitors Renting a Car in China: Full Process (2026)
Taiwanese friends flying into Yunnan often ask: can I use my Taiwan driver license directly? Do I need to apply for a permit? How long from landing to driving off the lot? This guide walks through the whole process specifically for Taiwanese visitors — applying for the temporary driving permit, booking the car, picking up at Lijiang airport, road rules, and the deposit refund. I have hosted hundreds of Taiwanese guests from Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung.
Taiwan license is not valid in China
First, the hard truth: Taiwan driver licenses cannot be used directly to drive in mainland China. China has not joined the UN road conventions, so International Driving Permits (IDP) are not recognized, and Taiwan licenses cannot be exchanged directly either. You need a Temporary Driving Permit of the People's Republic of China, issued by the traffic police.
Driving without it is "driving without a license" — fine 1000-2000 RMB, up to 15 days detention. One guest from Tainan did not believe me, got pulled over in Shangri-La, paid 1500 RMB, and his whole trip was ruined.
We arrange the permit — you do not need to show up
Fee: 1500 RMB. You do not need to visit the vehicle management office. Just send us scans of: your Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents (Tai-Bao-Zheng), and your Taiwan driver license (front and back). We handle translation and paperwork. Issued in 1-3 working days, valid 3 months, nationwide. Send the documents a week before you fly — when you land at Lijiang airport, the permit is already in the car.
Booking step by step
Step 1: Add WeChat qxzj7557. Tell us: dates, group size, arrival airport, route idea, sedan or SUV. Step 2: We quote and send car photos. You pay 600 RMB booking deposit (WeChat or PayPal). Step 3: Send Tai-Bao-Zheng and Taiwan license scans, we start the permit. Step 4: We meet you at Lijiang Sanyi airport exit holding a sign. Sign the contract, walk around the car filming. Step 5: You drive off, WeChat us 24/7 on the road. Step 6: Return the car, deposit refunded in 5-7 working days.
Which car
Lavida/Jetta 1.5L/1.4T: 260 RMB/day, 3000 deposit, unlimited mileage. For couples doing Lijiang-Dali-Erhai relaxed tour. Tank 300 2.0T: 400 RMB/day, 5000 deposit, 300 km/day. For groups of 3-4 going up to Shangri-La, Deqin, Meili Snow Mountain. If it is just Lijiang and Dali, Lavida is enough. If you are heading to Shangri-La, spend the extra on the Tank.
Classic routes for first-time Taiwanese visitors
Relaxed 5-day: Lijiang-Dali-Erhai loop. Light altitude, easy driving.
Yunnan-Tibet 8-day: Lijiang-Tiger Leaping Gorge-Shangri-La-Deqin-Feilaisi (Meili Snow Mountain). High altitude 3300m, Tank 300 recommended.
Lugu Lake 4-day: Lijiang-Lugu Lake loop, 3 hours mountain road.
Driving in China vs Taiwan
China drives on the right — same as Taiwan. Road signs are bilingual, navigation uses Amap or Baidu which we install for you. Pay for gas and parking with WeChat or Alipay linked to a credit card; carry a few hundred RMB cash. 92 octane gas everywhere on main roads. Speed limits: highway 100-120, national road 60-80, town 40, speed cameras frequent. Altitude on Shangri-La route: 3300m — no shower, no alcohol the first day, we provide oxygen bottles.
Deposit and refund
Lavida 3000, Tank 300 5000. We inspect at return, but refund in 5-7 working days because traffic fines upload late. Booking deposit 600: non-refundable if you cancel for personal reasons; double refund if we cannot deliver.
No electric cars
We do not rent Tesla or BYD. On Yunnan-Tibet and western Sichuan routes, charging stations are sparse, cold weather cuts range, and getting stranded in the mountains with a flat battery is expensive. We rent petrol cars with 500-600 km range — gas stations in every county.
