China now allows 30-day visa-free entry for citizens of many countries. But visa-free entry and driving are two different things. Here is the rule.
1. Visa-free entry does not equal driving
China has not joined the UN Road Traffic Convention. Your home driving licence and the International Driving Permit (IDP) are not valid in China. To drive legally you need a Chinese temporary driving permit.
2. What is the Chinese temporary driving permit
It is a document issued by the traffic police, valid for 3 months. You need: passport, Chinese visa (or visa-free stamp), home driving licence, a white-background ID photo. We apply for it on your behalf - you do not visit the vehicle office.
3. How we arrange it
- 2-3 weeks before your trip, send us photos of your passport, visa page, home licence and a white-background photo.
- We submit the application: 1,500 RMB, you do not need to appear.
- It takes 3-5 working days.
- We hand it to you at car pickup.
4. What happens if you drive without it
Driving without a Chinese permit is treated as unlicensed driving: fine 200-2,000 RMB, possible detention up to 15 days, and your insurance will not cover any accident. Traffic police check foreign cars regularly, especially at scenic area checkpoints.
