Dali Erhai Lake Self-Drive: One Day Enough? (2026)

Lijiang and Dali are the classic Yunnan first-timer route. Visitors ask: how far is Erhai loop? Can I do it in one day? How long from Lijiang to Dali? Where do I stop for photos? Can I pick up in Lijiang and drop in Dali? I have done this loop dozens of times. This is the route we tell our guests.

How long is the Erhai loop?

Around Erhai Lake: about 120 km. Drive slowly, stop for photos and lunch, and you can do the loop in 8-10 hours. One day is enough.

Note: peak season July-August, Dali Old Town and the west road get congested. Do not pack the schedule too tight.

Lijiang to Dali driving time

Lijiang to Dali is about 200 km on the highway: 2-2.5 hours driving, toll about 80 RMB, fuel about 100 RMB. Leave Lijiang in the morning, stop at a service area, arrive in Dali for lunch.

Many guests ask: can I take a bus Lijiang-Dali and rent in Dali? Yes, but our one-way fee is 1500 RMB — Lijiang pickup, Dali drop-off — and you use the 200 km transfer productively, not as backtracking.

The loop route (clockwise from Dali Old Town)

Dali Old Town -> Caicun Pier -> Panxi S-curve -> Xizhou Ancient Town -> Haishe Ecological Park -> Shangguan town -> Shuanglang Ancient Town -> Wase town -> Xiaoputuo (Little Putuo) -> Xiaguan -> back to Old Town. About 120 km.

Key stops:

Panxi S-curve: the famous photo spot on the west shore, a curved road running along the water. Morning is best — fewer people, good light. Park in the lot, not on the road.
Xizhou Ancient Town: Bai-style courtyard houses, Xizhou baba (local flatbread), rice fields. Lunch here.
Shuanglang Ancient Town: northeast shore, best panoramic view of Erhai. Afternoon coffee, wait for sunset.
Wase to Xiaoputuo: east shore drive facing the lake, afternoon light. Xiaoputuo is a tiny temple on an islet — quick photo.

One day, or overnight?

One day works if you are short on time, but it feels rushed. If you have the time, stay one night:

Day 1: Drive Lijiang to Dali (arrive noon), afternoon in Dali Old Town, stay near the old town.
Day 2: Loop Erhai, drop the car in Dali, fly out.

Erhai is about scenery, not checking boxes. Stop when something looks good.

Lijiang pickup, Dali drop-off

One-way fee: 1500 RMB. We have a partner point in Dali — you drop the car there, we send a driver to bring it back. Example itinerary: fly into Lijiang, two days in Lijiang Old Town, drive to Dali (2 hours), loop Erhai, two days in Dali, fly out of Dali airport. No backtracking. Reverse direction (Dali pickup, Lijiang drop-off) is the same fee.

Which car for Erhai?

The whole loop is paved. The Lavida at 260 RMB/day is plenty — narrow west road, small car easier to park. The Tank 300 works too but you do not need 4WD for Erhai. We recommend the Lavida for this route.

What to watch out for

West road has many e-bikes in peak season — drive slowly. Shuanglang town itself is car-free; park outside and walk in. East road is backlit in the afternoon — watch the road. The lakeside ecological corridor is for pedestrians and bikes only — enjoy it from the ring road. Eat in Xizhou or Shuanglang, not at the tourist-trap restaurants at the gate.

After dropping the car

Dali has its own airport (Dali Fengyi) — fly directly to Taipei or connect through Kunming. Or take the high-speed train to Kunming (2 hours) and fly from there. If you want to continue to Shangri-La or Tengchong, tell us and we plan the route.

Cost for two people

Lavida, two days, Lijiang pickup Dali drop-off: car 260 x 2 = 520, one-way fee 1500, fuel about 200, tolls about 160. Total about 2500 RMB all in. Compare that to renting an SUV in Taipei — good value.

Bottom line

Erhai is the easiest Yunnan self-drive route — no mountain passes, low altitude, smooth roads. Perfect first route. We are Yunnan Province International Travel Agency (Group) Co., Ltd.
