I have done one-way rentals many times: pick up in Lijiang and drop off in Dali, pick up in Chengdu and drop off in Lhasa, pick up in Urumqi and drop off in Kashgar. Every time someone adds me on WeChat asking: how does one-way rental billing really work? Are there traps? Will they add hidden charges? Today I will lay out all the pitfalls, the guests I have handled, and the lessons learned.

What is a one-way rental

Simply put, you pick up the car in city A and return it in city B. For example, you pick up at Lijiang Sanyi Airport and drop off by Erhai Lake in Dali; or you pick up at Chengdu Shuangliu Airport and drive along the G318 all the way to Lhasa; or you pick up at Urumqi Diwopu Airport and drop off in Kashgar. This arrangement where the pickup and return points differ is called a one-way rental.

A one-way rental suits a trip that follows a single line without doubling back. For example, you fly into Kunming, spend a few days, then drive to Chengdu and fly out; or you fly into Urumqi, drive the Duku Highway to Kuqa, and fly out from there. Without a one-way option you would have to drive the car back, wasting several days and fuel, and you could not enjoy the return drive anyway.

Here is an example. A guest picked up in Lijiang last year and originally planned to return in Dali, with a one-way fee of 1500 RMB. At first he thought it was expensive and wanted to drive back to Lijiang himself. It turned out the round trip from Dali to Lijiang took eight hours, cost over 300 RMB in fuel and tolls, and he only had half a day in Dali, with the rest spent driving. Later he told me he should have just taken the one-way option; the time saved would have let him stay one more night by Erhai Lake, worth more than anything.

How one-way rental fees are charged

Take our Lijiang-based rental as an example. Our Lijiang one-way fee is 1500 RMB. What does this cover? When you pick up in Lijiang and drive to Dali to return it, we send someone to Dali to drive the car back to Lijiang. That person's time, the fuel, and the tolls on the way back are all included in the 1500 RMB.

Dali is about 200 kilometers from Lijiang, a little over two hours on the highway. Why a flat 1500 instead of a smaller number? Because the staff member who drives it back has to get to Dali first, then drive back, which takes most of a day, plus fuel and tolls. We are not charging you for nothing; the cost is real.

For longer one-way distances, the fee is higher. Picking up in Lijiang and returning in Kunming is around 2000 RMB; returning in Chengdu is higher, because the drive back is longer. The exact fee depends on the distance and how hard it is to get the car back. Tell us your pickup and return cities and we will quote you a clear number.

Which one-way routes we support

The most common one we handle is Lijiang pickup, Dali return. Many guests fly into Lijiang and fly out of Dali, so this route is very common and the process is smooth.

We also support Dali pickup, Lijiang return, at the same 1500 RMB. For more complicated arrangements such as Kunming pickup with Dali return, or Lijiang pickup with Chengdu return, tell us in advance and we will calculate the price.

One thing to note: not every city can be a return point. We need a local contact or a staff member able to collect the car. If you want to return in a small remote town, we may not be able to arrange it, or the fee will be higher. So confirm your return city with us before booking.

Common one-way rental pitfalls

The first pitfall: not booking the one-way option in advance. Some guests only mention at return that they want to drop off in another city. We may not have staff available on short notice, which can delay your trip. Tell us when you book, so we can arrange the collection.

The second pitfall: misunderstanding the fee. The one-way fee is separate from the daily rent. The daily rent pays for using the car; the one-way fee pays for getting the car back. Do not assume the one-way fee is included in the rent.

The third pitfall: returning the car late. With a one-way rental, a staff member is scheduled to collect the car at an agreed time. If you return late, that person's schedule is disrupted and you may be charged an extra half-day or full-day rent. Return on time.

The fourth pitfall: fuel and damage. The same rules apply as a normal return: fill the tank before returning, and any new damage is handled by the insurance terms. The one-way option does not change these rules.

Is one-way rental worth it

It depends on your itinerary. If your route is a straight line and you would otherwise have to drive back, the one-way fee is usually worth it. You save time and fuel, and you avoid a tiring return drive. For a Lijiang-to-Dali trip, 1500 RMB buys you most of a day, which many guests find worthwhile.

If your trip is a loop, starting and ending in the same city, you do not need a one-way option and you save the fee. Choose based on your actual route rather than assuming one-way is always better.

My advice

First, plan your route before booking and decide whether you need a one-way rental. Second, tell us your pickup and return cities early and get a clear quote. Third, understand that the one-way fee is separate from rent and covers the real cost of returning the car. Fourth, return the car on time and with a full tank. Fifth, confirm that your return city is one we can actually service.

In short, a one-way rental is a convenient option for a single-line trip, but you should arrange it early and understand the fee. If anything is unclear, message me on WeChat and I will help you work out the route and cost.
