Winter (November to February) is actually the best season for Yunnan self-drive: clear skies, low rain, and the highest chance of seeing the Meili Snow Mountain sunrise golden light. But cold and ice require preparation.
1. Temperatures
Kunming: 8-15 C daytime, 2-5 C night. Lijiang: 5-12 C. Shangri-La: -5 to 8 C. Deqin/Feilaisi: -10 to 5 C. Even in Chengdu it can drop to 5 C. Bring a down jacket.
2. Ice on high passes
The Baima Snow Mountain pass (4,292 m) between Shangri-La and Deqin can have black ice from November to March. The Zheduo pass (4,298 m) on G318 is similar. We fit snow chains on all cars going to these routes. Drive 30-40 km/h on icy sections, no sudden braking.
3. What to pack
- Down jacket or thick coat
- Sunglasses (snow reflection)
- SPF50 sunscreen (high altitude UV)
- Thermal layers
- Hand warmers
4. Daylight hours
In winter the sun sets around 18:30. Do not plan to drive after dark on mountain roads. Start early, finish by 17:00.
5. Hotel heating
Yunnan hotels use electric heaters, not central heating. We book hotels with confirmed heating. Bring an extra layer for the night.
6. Common questions
Q: Will the highway close in snow? A: Heavy snow may close it for 4-8 hours. We check the weather a week before.
Q: Can the car fail to start in cold? A: We maintain all cars; if it does not start we send rescue. The car is ours.
Q: Is winter worth it for Meili? A: Yes - November to February has the highest golden-light probability.
