Why these routes are recommended
Hong Kong and Macau visitors have a few special circumstances on a first mainland trip. You drive on the left at home and must adapt to driving on the right. You may be unfamiliar with mainland traffic rules, road conditions, and navigation. Your holiday is often around a week, so you do not want to spend all of it on the road. The routes below therefore have good roads, fine scenery, moderate distances, and suit beginners, rather than rough, high-altitude, or very long drives.
Route one: Lijiang to Dali loop, most recommended for beginners
This is the route I most recommend for a first mainland self-drive. Pick up in Lijiang, drive to Dali, circle Erhai Lake, and either return in Dali as a one-way rental or drive back to Lijiang. The total distance is around 400 kilometers over 3 to 4 days.
The roads are good, with a highway and smooth tarmac between Lijiang and Dali, so you do not face rough tracks or cliff roads. The scenery is strong, passing Lashihai and Jianchuan before the 120-kilometer Erhai loop with lakeside stops. Distances are short, at about three hours to Dali, so you will not be exhausted. Both cities are mature tourist destinations with hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and toilets for easy supplies. It suits first-time drivers, less experienced travelers, and families with elderly members or children.
Route two: Lijiang to Shangri-La short loop
With a bit more time and a wish for highland scenery, take this route: Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Shangri-La, Pudacuo, and back, around 600 kilometers over 4 to 5 days. It offers gorges, grasslands, and alpine lakes. Shangri-La sits around 3300 meters, where most people do not have severe altitude sickness. The road is tarmac but has many mountain bends, so drive slowly. Rest for half a day on arrival, do not overtake across the center line, and bring a warm jacket for the large day-night temperature difference. It suits reasonably experienced, healthy travelers who want highland scenery.
Route three: Dali to Tengchong
For different scenery without high altitude, try Dali, Baoshan, and Tengchong, including the hot springs, around 800 kilometers over 5 to 6 days. The scenery changes from lakes to mountains and volcanoes. Tengchong is good for slow travel, with hot springs, volcanic sites, and Heshun Old Town. The roads mix highways and national roads. Split the longer drives across two days and do not attempt it all in one. It suits travelers who like a slow pace and have five or more days.
Route four: Chengdu to Daocheng Yading, advanced
Once you have some mainland driving experience, a longer, more dramatic route is Chengdu, Kangding, Xinduqiao, Litang, Daocheng Yading, and back, around 1500 kilometers over at least 7 days. I do not recommend it for a first trip because the altitude is high, up to 4700 meters at Yading, the daily drives are long at five or six hours, and the winding mountain roads and fast-changing weather are demanding. It is only for well-prepared travelers with prior experience.
Special reminders for Hong Kong and Macau drivers
Keep reminding yourself to drive on the right, especially when turning, overtaking, and changing lanes; start slowly. Use Amap or Baidu navigation rather than Google Maps, which does not work in the mainland, as they show limits, turns, and cameras. Mainland highways charge tolls, so have mobile payment ready. Refill when you see a station rather than waiting for a low tank, especially in remote areas. Carry your Home Visit Permit, license, and temporary permit, since officers may stop you. Do not drive tired; keep daily driving under five hours and avoid night roads.
Common route questions
With three days, choose Lijiang to Dali: one day to arrive, one day around Erhai, one day back. With five days, choose the Shangri-La loop via Tiger Leaping Gorge and Pudacuo. With seven days, the Dali to Tengchong route gives a comfortable pace. With elderly travelers or children, choose Lijiang to Dali for good roads and low altitude rather than Shangri-La.
My advice
On a first mainland trip, take the Lijiang to Dali route to adapt safely to right-hand driving and mainland rules. Move on to longer routes only after you have gained experience. Do not start with rough roads or long hauls when unfamiliar with the conditions. Keep daily driving under five hours, avoid night driving, check the weather, and refill early. Message me with your holiday length, group size, and driving experience, and I will help plan a suitable route.
