If Kunming is the gateway to Yunnan, Lijiang is the heart of Yunnan road trips. The real sights — Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La, Meili Snow Mountain — all sit to the northwest, so many visitors fly straight to Lijiang Sanji Airport (LJG) instead of driving 330 km from Kunming. The airport is 28 km, 40 minutes from Lijiang old town.
1. How pickup works
Lijiang airport is small. Land, walk five minutes to the terminal, collect bags, meet our driver at arrivals, and we drive you ten minutes to our parking lot. About 20 minutes to sign the contract. Lijiang is 2,400 m; spend one night before climbing to Shangri-La (3,300 m).
2. Three routes from Lijiang
Dali-Lijiang mini loop (4-5 days): D1 pick up in Lijiang, old town; D2 Lijiang to Dali (180 km, 2.5 h), loop Erhai; D3 Dali old town and Xizhou; D4 return to Lijiang and fly out.
Shangri-La route (5-6 days): D1 Lijiang; D2 Lijiang to Shangri-La (170 km, 3.5 h on G214), Dukezong old town; D3 Shangri-La to Deqin (180 km), Feilaisi for Meili Sunrise; D4 back to Shangri-La; D5 Shangri-La to Lijiang. This route climbs from 2,400 to 3,400 m — rent the Tank 300.
Daocheng Yading grand loop (8-10 days): north through Shangri-La and Xiangcheng into Sichuan. Wildest scenery, requires the Tank 300.
3. Parking in Lijiang old town
The UNESCO old town is closed to outside cars. Stay at a hotel with parking, or use the north/gate public lots, 20-30 CNY/day. Walk in — rolling luggage on stone streets is painful.
4. Lijiang to Shangri-La on G214
170 km, 3.5 hours, all tarmac, many bends, climbing from 2,400 to 3,300 m. Do not overtake across the centre line; rainy season (July-Aug) watch for rockfall; winter (Dec-Feb) high passes may snow, we carry chains. Stop at Tiger Leaping Gorge halfway. Acclimatise: drink water, do not over-exert at 3,200 m in Xiaozhongdian.
5. Shangri-La to Deqin (Meili Snow Mountain)
Another 180 km west on G214, over the Baima Snow Mountain pass at 4,292 m. Stay at Feilaisi for the sunrise on Meili. Best chance of seeing the golden sunrise is autumn (Oct-Nov), then winter; rainy season is cloudy.
6. Seasons and cost
Best windows mid-March to mid-May and mid-September to early November. A 5-day Shangri-La trip in a Tank 300: rental 400x5 = 2,000; deposit 5,000; temporary permit 1,500; booking deposit 600; fuel ~600; tolls ~100; total about 9,800 CNY (~1,350 USD). Split two ways = 675 USD each.
