Kunming Changshui International (KMG) is where most foreign visitors first land in Yunnan. Direct flights connect Bangkok, Hanoi, Seoul, Osaka, Sydney and Melbourne. After a decade meeting arrivals, I can walk you through every step.
1. Why start in Kunming?
Three reasons: altitude 1,900 m is lower than Dali (2,000), Lijiang (2,400) and Shangri-La (3,300), so you acclimatise; the Kunming-Dali motorway is 330 km of smooth tarmac with dense service areas; and we keep our full fleet and support team here.

2. After you land
- Exit the plane and pass immigration (show passport and visa);
- Collect bags;
- Walk through the nothing-to-declare customs channel;
- Our driver holds a sign with your name at arrivals.
Usually 40 minutes total. Our parking lot is a 5-minute shuttle from the terminal. We walk around the car, take six photos of existing damage, sign the English contract, about 20 minutes.
3. Bring on pickup day
Passport, Chinese visa, home driving licence, the temporary permit we already arranged, and the deposit via WeChat/Alipay. No credit card needed.
4. The first motorway: Kunming to Dali
From the airport take the G56 Hangrui Expressway west to Dali, 330 km, 3.5-4 hours. Speed limit 120, about 30 tunnels at 80 with headlights on. Service areas every 50 km; stop at Chuxiongba after 160 km. Tolls around 150 CNY. Fuel up at the Sinopec/PetroChina stations in the service areas; our cars take 92 octane, about 7.8 CNY/litre.
5. Should you see Kunming first?
If you land before 3 pm, stay one night. Fly day fatigue plus altitude is not safe for a long drive. Walk Green Lake, try crossing-the-bridge noodles, leave next morning and arrive in Dali for sunset over Erhai.
6. Recommended routes from Kunming
Classic 5 days: D1 fly in and sleep Kunming; D2 Kunming to Dali (330 km), old town; D3 loop Erhai 130 km; D4 Dali to Lijiang (180 km); D5 return the car in Lijiang (one-way fee 1,500 CNY) and fly out.
Deep 7 days: add Lijiang to Shangri-La (170 km mountain road), then Deqin and Meili Snow Mountain. Rent the Tank 300 for this segment.
7. Five things to watch
Kunming has plate restrictions but you bypass the centre by going straight to the motorway. Altitude: acclimatise in Dali before climbing to Shangri-La. Rainy season May-October means afternoon showers. Keep the tank above half once you leave the city. Download Amap before you land.
8. Cost example, 5 days
Lavida rental 260x5 = 1,300; deposit 3,000 (refunded); temporary permit 1,500; Lijiang one-way 1,500; booking deposit 600; fuel ~600; tolls ~300. Total about 5,200 CNY (~720 USD) excluding hotels and food. Split two ways that is 360 USD each for five days. Compare: a sedan in Thailand is 30-40 USD/day, in New Zealand 80-100 USD/day. Here you get insurance and unlimited km for 36 USD.
