People often add me on WeChat at the last minute saying they arrive in Lijiang tomorrow and want to rent a car today, only for me to check the calendar and find it is a national holiday with no cars left. Today I will explain the peak-season patterns, how prices move, and how booking early works.

When the mainland rental peak seasons are

There are several main peak periods. The May Day holiday around May 1 to 5 is a short break with good weather and strong rental demand. The summer vacation in July and August brings family trips, when Yunnan, Xinjiang, and Qinghai are popular for cool weather. The National Day holiday around October 1 to 7 is one of the year's longest breaks, with fine autumn scenery in Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La and very high demand. The Spring Festival in late January or early February also draws visitors to warm Yunnan. Beyond these, weekends and the days around smaller holidays are somewhat busier.

How peak-season prices move

Our regular prices are 260 RMB per day for the Lavida/Jetta and 400 RMB per day for the Tank 300. In peak season these rise depending on how tight supply is. During major holidays such as May Day and National Day, prices may rise by 50% to 100%, so the Lavida could cost around 390 to 520 RMB per day and the Tank 300 around 600 to 800 RMB.

Prices rise because the number of cars is fixed while demand climbs, the same reason hotels and flights cost more in holidays. However, booking early locks in the price. If you book a month ahead at the regular rate, later increases do not affect you.

How early to book

I suggest booking at least a month ahead in peak season so we can hold a car. A week ahead may leave only a few expensive cars, and a day ahead often means no car at all. For a super-peak period such as National Day, two months ahead is safer; many people plan well in advance and the fleet fills quickly. Last National Day we were fully booked two weeks early, and last-minute callers had to be turned away.

What to note when booking

The earlier you book, the cheaper it is. At booking you pay a 600 RMB deposit to guarantee you will collect the car; if you cancel for personal reasons, this deposit is not refunded. State your needs clearly: car type, pickup time and location, one-way rental, and pets, so we can arrange everything. Confirm the price at booking; that is the price you pay even if rates rise later, which is the main benefit of booking early.

Consequences of last-minute booking

Thinking there are rental shops everywhere does not hold in peak season. You may find no car at all after visiting several shops and have to rely on buses or chartered cars, which cost more. Even if you find a car, it will be at the highest peak price, possibly doubling your cost for a week. The economical models may be gone, leaving only pricier SUVs or luxury cars.

Is low season good value

Low season covers the non-peak months such as March, April, June, September, November, and December, when cars are available at regular rates and you can book just a few days ahead. If your schedule is flexible, low season is a good choice: fewer crowds, good scenery, and lower prices, with quiet old towns and uncongested lakeside roads.

Monthly price reference

January to February includes the Spring Festival peak, with the highest prices around the holiday itself. March is low season at regular rates. April is low season apart from a small rise around Qingming. May has the May Day peak and otherwise low season. June is low season before students break. July and August are the summer peak, up around 30% to 50%. September is low season apart from small rises around Mid-Autumn. October includes one of the year's costliest periods around National Day, then low season. November and December are low season at regular rates.

Ways to save in peak season

Booking early is the main saving, holding a car at the regular rate. Off-peak timing helps too, since the very first and last days of a holiday are often the most expensive. Choose an economical car; SUVs rise the most, while the Lavida is enough on good roads and is cheaper to run. Longer rentals can also attract a small discount, for example a slightly lower daily rate across seven days.

The booking process

First, contact us on WeChat or WhatsApp with your needs. Second, we quote and confirm availability. Third, you pay the 600 RMB booking deposit. Fourth, we send a booking confirmation with your pickup time, location, car type, and price. Fifth, you collect the car at the agreed time, pay the balance and deposit, and drive away.

My advice

First, book at least a month ahead in peak season, two months for the busiest dates. Second, lock in the price so later increases do not affect you. Third, choose low season if your schedule allows. Fourth, state all needs at booking, including one-way rental, pets, and child seats. Fifth, remember the 600 RMB deposit is non-refundable, so confirm your plans before paying.

In short, planning ahead saves money and stress, while last-minute booking means no car or high prices. Message me early and I will check availability for your dates.
