The Lavida trunk space
The Volkswagen Lavida is our most frequently rented model because it is economical, practical, and fuel-efficient. Its trunk is roughly 490 liters. In practice that means two 28-inch large suitcases plus a 20-inch carry-on, or one 28-inch case with two backpacks and a few shopping bags. For two travelers with two large cases it is fully adequate. For three people each with a large case it gets tight. The trunk is deep, though the opening is not especially large, so angle bulky cases carefully.
The Jetta trunk space
The Jetta is also a compact sedan, with a trunk of roughly 440 liters, slightly smaller than the Lavida but similar in practice. Two people with two large cases are fine. For three, trim the luggage down to smaller cases or keep one bag in the back seat.
The Tank 300 trunk space
The Tank 300 SUV has a much larger usable cargo area. Its trunk is around 400 liters on paper, but the boxy shape and high roof mean it actually carries more than the number suggests. You can fit three large suitcases plus backpacks, and folding the rear seats opens a large space for tents, folding tables, and camping gear. The SUV cargo area is tall, so you can stack items, whereas a sedan trunk is flat and shallow. It suits guests who camp, drive rough roads, or carry a lot of gear.
How to load luggage sensibly
Loading matters. Put heavy items low and light items on top, with the heavy cases at the bottom close to the axle, which keeps the car stable. Load large items first and fill gaps with small bags and backpacks so nothing rattles while driving. Keep things you will need, such as chargers, sunglasses, water, and snacks, within easy reach rather than buried in the deepest suitcase; use the back seat or door pockets. Do not stack luggage so high that it blocks the rear window, since you need to see behind you when reversing.
What not to put in the trunk
Do not leave valuables such as wallets, passports, laptops, or cameras in the trunk; take them when you leave the car, since trunks can be pried open. Do not carry flammable items such as lighters, power banks, or fuel cans, which can overheat in a hot car. Do not put a live animal in the trunk, where it can overheat; pets travel in the back seat with supervision. Avoid strong-smelling food such as stinky tofu, because the odor lingers and can lead to a cleaning fee.
Luggage for different group sizes
Two people: two 28-inch cases and two backpacks fit in a Lavida or Jetta. Three people: three 24-inch cases and three backpacks are better in a Tank 300. Four people: four 24-inch cases and four backpacks need a Tank 300, with one bag in the back seat. Traveling with a child: three cases plus a stroller and the child's gear are easier in a Tank 300. Camping: two cases plus a tent, folding furniture, and sleeping bags suit a Tank 300 with the rear seats folded.
Common trunk-space misconceptions
An SUV trunk is not always larger than a sedan on paper; some compact SUVs have less cargo volume than a mid-size sedan, so look at height and width rather than one number. Do not overfill the trunk, since blocking the rear view is unsafe; keep loads below the seat-line height. More luggage is not better, because searching through an overstuffed car is frustrating; pack lightly and keep essentials accessible.
A packing list for a one-week self-drive
Clothing: three or four changes of clothes each, a warm jacket for the cool Yunnan mornings and evenings, and comfortable walking shoes. Electronics: phone chargers, a power bank, a camera, and cables. Documents: passport, license, temporary permit, rental contract, and credit card. Daily items: sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a thermos, and wipes. Food: snacks, water, and road-trip provisions. Other: an umbrella, trash bags, and tissues. Two people can fit all of this in two 28-inch cases and two backpacks.
My advice
First, choose the car by group size; a Lavida or Jetta suits two people, while three or more should consider a Tank 300. Second, pack lightly and wash clothes on the road rather than bringing a whole wardrobe. Third, load heavy items low and keep essentials accessible. Fourth, take valuables with you. Fifth, never block the rear window.
Trunk space is not a major problem if you think ahead about how much you carry and choose the right car. Tell us how many people and how many cases, and we will recommend the suitable car.
