After ten years running Yunnan routes and helping hundreds of foreign visitors pick up rental cars, I know how nervous first-timers feel. This guide covers everything we have learned.
Who is this for? Visitors flying into Kunming, Lijiang, Chengdu or Xining who want to rent and drive at their own pace; first-timers unsure of Chinese rules; drivers from the UK, Australia, Japan, Thailand or Malaysia used to driving on the left.
This guide covers landing, picking up a rental and driving. It does not cover driving your own car across a border.
Quick answers:
Q: Do I need an IDP? A: No. China does not recognise the IDP. We arrange a Chinese temporary driving permit in your absence.
Q: Deposit? A: 3,000 CNY sedan, 5,000 CNY SUV. Refunded 5-7 working days after return.
Q: Can I drive to Tibet? A: Foreigners need a guide and a Tibet permit. We do not recommend self-drive there.
Q: Price per day? A: Sedan 260 CNY, Tank 300 SUV 400 CNY.

1. Who can rent?
You must be at least 21 and have held your home licence for one year. Drivers under 25 can only rent sedans.
2. The Chinese temporary driving permit
China has not joined the UN Road Traffic Convention. Your home licence and the IDP are not valid here. Send us photos of your passport, Chinese visa, home licence and a white-background ID photo. We apply for the permit: 1,500 CNY, you do not visit the vehicle office, 3-5 working days, handed to you at pickup. Valid 3 months. Driving without it means a 200-2,000 CNY fine, up to 15 days detention, and insurance will not cover accidents.
3. What cars and prices
We offer only petrol cars, no EVs. Sedan/SUV: VW Lavida 1.5L or Jetta 1.4T, 260 CNY/day, deposit 3,000, unlimited km. Off-road: GWM Tank 300 2.0T, 400 CNY/day, deposit 5,000, 300 km/day. One-way drop-off in Lijiang 1,500 CNY; booking deposit 600 CNY non-refundable on cancellation.
4. Insurance
Rental includes compulsory and commercial third-party (500k). Not full cover: damage under 1,500 CNY you pay; over 1,500 insurance pays 70% you pay 30%; paint-saving scratches free; no downtime or depreciation on repairs. Optional zero-excess waiver +50 CNY/day.
5. How pickup works
- 2-3 weeks before departure send licence photos for the permit;
- We meet you at Kunming or Lijiang airport arrivals;
- Walk around the car, take six photos, sign the English contract;
- Drive off, WeChat 24/7;
- Return the car, deposit back in 5-7 days.
6. Eight practical details
Navigation: Google Maps is blocked. Use Amap (Gaode) or Baidu Maps. Payment: tolls at manned booths in cash or WeChat/Alipay; petrol stations rarely take foreign cards, carry cash. Keep right: China drives on the right; left-hand-drive country visitors take the first two days easy. Limits: motorway 120, national road 80, city 60, village 40. Fuel: 92 octane. Tolls: about 0.5 CNY/km in Yunnan, Kunming-Dali around 150 CNY. Parking: 10-20 CNY; old towns are closed to outside cars. Cameras: fines appear 5-7 days after the trip.
7. Accidents
Self-inflicted damage: tow fee on you, we help arrange it. Mechanical failure: rescue and repair on us. Call 122 (traffic police) and 120 (ambulance) for injuries.
8. Where you cannot go
Tibet needs a guide and Tibet permit; Beijing needs a Beijing entry permit; some Xinjiang/Gansu border areas are closed. Our main Yunnan loop Kunming-Dali-Lijiang-Shangri-La-Deqin is fully open.
9. Routes
- 4-5 days: Kunming-Dali-Lijiang-Kunming;
- 6-7 days: add Shangri-La and Meili Snow Mountain;
- 8-10 days: add Daocheng Yading in an SUV.
10. Bottom line
The real barrier is the temporary permit and unfamiliarity, not the car or money. We have smoothed both over ten years. You just fly in. Add WeChat qxzj7557 (WhatsApp +86 137-5915-5671).
