Yes — you can legally drive your own foreign-plated car into China, and thousands of travellers do it every year. The process is paperwork-heavy, but with a licensed agency handling it, you simply show up at the port and drive out.

1. Documents you need

  • Passport with a valid visa for entering China
  • Your national driving licence, plus the translation or permit accepted at entry
  • Vehicle registration and proof of ownership
  • Valid insurance for the vehicle (required for the temporary entry period)

2. Customs declaration at the port

Your vehicle enters China under temporary entry rules. The customs declaration covers the vehicle itself and sets the approved period. This is filed at the entry port with the vehicle physically present.

3. Entry deposit

A refundable deposit is arranged for the temporary entry of the vehicle. The deposit is returned when the vehicle leaves China with the required paperwork. A written record of the deposit and refund process protects both sides.

4. Route filing and area permits

Your planned route and itinerary are filed so you can drive legally within the approved scope. Some areas — notably Tibet and certain border regions — need additional permits for foreign travellers and foreign vehicles.

5. On the road

Tolls are paid per kilometre on most expressways (ETC lanes work with temporary plates), fuel is available in every county town, and overnight camping is common in the west. Keep your customs papers with the vehicle at all times.
