The Duku Highway (Dushanzi–Kuqa) crosses the Tianshan with scenery most roads can only dream of — but it is seasonal, and the details matter.
When it opens
The road typically opens around June (after snow is cleared) and closes again in October when snow returns. Exact dates vary by year and by snow conditions — always confirm the current opening status before planning, and again before departure.
What to expect
In one day you can climb from desert-edge grassland through pine forests to passes around 3,000 m, then drop into the southern oases. Expect heavy weekend traffic in July–August, when the road can feel like a festival.
Permits and vehicle rules
Driving in Xinjiang with a foreign vehicle requires route filing; some border-adjacent districts add extra requirements for foreign travellers. We confirm what applies to your itinerary and file the route for you before you arrive.
Practical planning
- Fuel: fill in Dushanzi, Nalati and Bayanbulak — no stations on the passes
- Lodging: book Nalati and Bayanbulak accommodation early in peak season
- Weather: passes can close for snow even in July; keep a flexible day
- Best balance: mid-June or late-September — lighter traffic, stable weather
The Duku makes a great stand-alone 4–6 day trip or the highlight of a larger Xinjiang loop.
