The G318 from Chengdu to Lhasa is China’s most famous self-drive route. Planning it properly makes the difference between a trip you enjoy and one you endure.

Best season

April–October is the practical window. July–August is the wettest (landslides possible); late September–October gives the clearest skies and golden plateau colours. Shoulder months (April–May) can still bring snow at the passes.

Key passes to respect

  • Zheduo Pass (4,298 m) — first big test from Chengdu
  • Kazila Mountain (4,412 m) near Litang
  • Dongda Mountain (5,130 m) on the eastern Tibetan plateau
  • Mila Pass (5,013 m) before Lhasa

Fuel and stops

Fuel is available in Kangding, Litang, Batang, Mangkam, Basu, Bomi and Nyingchi. Between Litang and Batang and in parts of eastern Tibet, stretches of 200+ km without fuel exist — top up early, carry a reserve can if possible.

Foreign vehicle permits

Driving into Tibet with a foreign-plated vehicle requires route filing and entry permits for the region, arranged before you reach the border. We handle this as part of our service — send your dates and vehicle details early, as processing takes time.

Itinerary shape

Plan 10–14 days: Chengdu → Kangding → Xinduqiao → Litang → Batang → Mangkam → Basu → Bomi → Nyingchi → Lhasa. Add rest days above 4,000 m; the journey is about altitude, not speed.
