The Qinghai Lake loop is the classic first plateau drive in China — big scenery, gentle difficulty, and a loop you can finish in a long weekend or stretch into a week.
Best time
June–September. July brings canola fields in Menyuan and peak crowds; late September trades flowers for golden grasslands and clearer air. The lake shore can be cold at night even in summer — around 3,200 m, it is real altitude.
Which way around
Drive the loop counter-clockwise from Xining: Riyue Mountain → south shore (Black Horse River) → Chaka detour → Gangcha → Qilian mountains → Menyuan → Xining. The south shore catches the afternoon light on the lake; the north side adds the Qilian range.
Where to camp
The south shore and Black Horse River area are the traditional camping spots — grassland between the road and the lake. Follow local rules, take your rubbish, and note the night wind can be strong.
Chaka Salt Lake
Chaka is a 2-hour drive from the south shore. Visit in the morning for the mirror effect (before wind picks up) or at sunset. Note it is a separate entrance fee and a short detour.
Practical numbers
- Loop distance: roughly 350 km around the lake, 700 km including the Qilian–Menyuan leg
- Time: 4–6 days at a comfortable pace
- Cost: 400–700 CNY per day for two people
- Fuel: towns on the loop all have stations; fill at Xining or Gangcha before long stretches
One of the easiest routes to combine with entry via western ports — and a gentle way to start a longer western China trip.
